Pomorie Mayor Ivan Alexiev signed a contract on a project to reduce marine waste

Mayor Ivan Alexiev signed a contract for the provision of financial assistance for the project "Reduction of marine waste from terrestrial sources in a target water area on the territory of the municipality of Pomorie together with an educated and informed society regarding the pollution of sea waters", which is implemented with the financial support of the Program "Environmental protection and climate change", through the EEA FM 2014-2021.
As part of the project, Pomorie Municipality will purchase two high-tech water drones to collect waste floating on the surface of the water, such as polyethylene bags, household plastics, abandoned gill nets, etc. The drones will be able to detect chemicals in the water and collect data on the marine environment. In this way, cleaning and subsequent monitoring and management of the waters of the three target water areas under the project will be carried out, namely: the Aheloy River, the Pomorie Lake and the marine environment along the shores of the Black Sea, incl. the two ports in Pomorie.
The drones leave a zero carbon footprint during operation and will be additionally equipped with relevant sensors to collect and store through an online portal cloud service of relevant information and data. Based on the collected information, an analysis of the condition will be prepared and a system will be developed to protect the marine environment from terrestrial sources of pollution from human activity in the target water area under the project.

The project also envisages the implementation of two educational and one national campaign to raise awareness regarding the pollution of sea waters and the production of advertising and informational films.

The Municipality of Pomorie implements the project in partnership with the Local Fishery Initiative Group /MIRG / - Pomorie and the Norwegian company International Development Norway AS, which will share good practices and participate in training on the applicability and reuse of collected waste from the surface of water resources.

The implementation period is 24 months.
