Today, the opening press conference on the project "Reduction of marine waste from terrestrial sources in a target water area on the territory of the municipality of Pomorie together with an educated and informed society aimed at the pollution of sea waters" is being held, which is being carried out with the financial support of the "Environmental Protection" Program and climate change", through the EEA FM 2014-2021.
"It is extremely important to protect the sea and the natural features of Pomorie, because we are a resort town, and without a clean sea and clean beaches there is no way to develop tourism and offer high quality to our tourists," said Mayor Ivan Alexiev during the event, which was attended by students from SU "Ivan Vazov" - town of Pomorie, representatives of the fishermen's association, residents of Pomorie and the project team.
Georgi Petkov - representative of the Local Fishery Initiative Group - Pomorie and partner in the project, specified that one of the priorities in the association's strategy is environmental protection. "This is a project that builds on what has been done so far and aims to form attitudes and behavior that are also supported by the donor countries - Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein," he added.
The main goals and activities of the project were presented to the attendees, among which the main one is the purchase of two high-tech water drones for collecting waste floating on the surface of the water, such as polyethylene bags, household plastics, abandoned gillnets, etc. The drones will be able to detect chemicals in the water and collect data on the marine environment. In this way, cleaning and subsequent monitoring and management of the waters of the three target water areas under the project will be carried out, namely: the Aheloy River, the Pomorie Lake and the marine environment along the shores of the Black Sea, incl. the two ports in Pomorie.
The project also envisages the implementation of two educational and one national campaign to raise awareness regarding the pollution of sea waters and the production of advertising and informational films.
The Municipality of Pomorie implements the project in partnership with the Local Fishery Initiative Group /MIRG / - Pomorie and the Norwegian company International Development Norway AS, which will share good practices and participate in training on the applicability and reuse of collected waste from the surface of water resources.
The deadline for the project is 26.02.2023.
