The first initiative on a project to reduce marine litter in Pomorie was held
On December 14, 2023, the first initiative to reduce pollution from terrestrial sources of the marine environment was carried out by cleaning the first target location on the shores of the Black Sea - Pomorie Fishing Port and Passenger Port, falling within the territorial scope of the Pomorie municipality, planned by project BGENVIRONMENT-2.003-0006 "Reduction of marine waste from terrestrial sources in a target water area on the territory of the municipality of Pomorie in an educated and informed society in relation to the pollution of sea waters" financed under the "Environmental Protection and Climate Change" Program of the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEF) 2014-2021, which the Municipality of Pomorie implements. Partners in the project are Local Fishery Initiative Group /MIRG/ - Pomorie and the Norwegian company International Development Norway AS.
For this purpose, the municipality of Pomorie purchased and put into operation two high-tech water drones for collecting waste floating on the surface of the water, including: polyethylene bags, household plastics, abandoned gill nets, removing foreign and harmful vegetation from the water and etc. The two aquatic drones function as an intelligent instrument floating in the water, retrieving unwanted waste and material, and collecting data about the marine environment.
In this way, the cleaning and the subsequent monitoring and management of the waters of the three target water areas will be carried out. The drones specially selected and included in the project leave a zero carbon footprint during operation.
Two more initiatives are pending in the target locations (target water area) of the project, which are planned to be carried out in the Aheloy River, which flows into the Black Sea on the territory of the Pomorie municipality, and in the Pomorie Lake.
The main objective of the project is the implementation of three initiatives to reduce the amount of waste in the marine environment from terrestrial sources and on this basis, the development and implementation of two educational campaigns and a national campaign to raise awareness regarding the pollution of marine waters.
Measures to increase the awareness of the general public are also planned to demonstrate the diversity and multifunctionality of the implemented initiatives to reduce the amount of waste in the marine environment from terrestrial sources.
The realization of the main goals and the planned measures of the project will become a prerequisite for replicating and multiplying the achieved results at the regional and national level, as well as attracting and provoking citizens to environmentally friendly thinking and, more specifically, to thinking in the direction of reducing the pollution of the marine environment, incl. to the prospects that cleaner seawater provides to citizens and local businesses.
